CLFS Teams Compete In Cambridge Union Schools’ Debate
Tuesday 9th November 2010 – Epsom College
Report by Chantal de Gaston-Cooper
Team A – Charlotte Fryer, Rebecca Howe
Team B – Abbie Bender, Chantal de Gaston-Cooper
Team C – Amelia Storr, Moya Smith
“Swing” – Catherine Sadler, Margaret Young
Mrs. Trehearn was delighted to send three teams plus a “swing” team to Epsom College on Tuesday 9th November to participate in this prestigious event. As many of the team members were new to debating most were nervous. However, the kind hospitality and atmosphere provided by Epsom College made everyone feel very welcome.
The motion for the pre-released debate was “This House would ban music that glorifies crime”. The unprepared motion, which proved a challenge to the new debaters, was: “This House would abolish faith schools.”
A notable performance came from first-time debater, Abbie Bender who later said, “it was a good experience and it increased my confidence as I was forced to do something outside of my comfort zone.”
Catherine Sadler and Margaret Young, our more experienced debaters, were required to debate alone in two separate teams, as a number of schools were under-represented. Both girls held themselves admirably in a challenging situation.
Overall, everyone enjoyed the evening and we look forward to the next competition.

Annual CLFS Debating Dinner
On Tuesday 30th March, the annual CLFS debating dinner took place, celebrating a year of debating fun and tremendous successes.
We enjoyed heartfelt speeches from Mrs Trehearne, and our chair Laura, ‘played’ somewhat ridiculous debating games and of course ate lots of good food whilst gossiping heartily. Lots of fun and a great celebration! (see blog for debating game antics)

Oxford Union Finals Day, 13th March 2010

Hannah Kent & Laura Grayling (L6) at Oxford Union Schools Finals Day
Regional finalists Laura Grayling & Hannah Kent attended finals day this year. They placed first in two out of four of their debates:
"This house would require government to call a referendum before commencing a non-defensive war" and "This house would remove charitable status from organisations dedicated solely to animal welfare"
They placed mid-table by the end of the competition and were a credit to the school.
